We don’t get fooled again!
I’ll tip my hat to the new Constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I’ll get on my knees and pray
We don’t get fooled again
Let us hope that this song of 50 years ago is not as prophetic today as it was then. We are told of a once in a lifetime opportunity is arising for the people of Iran and by extension the whole of the Middle East. That the possibility exists for the people of Iran to take back their lives and live once again in Persian comforts and freedoms.
War is big business. But encouraging war to come to your home shores is bad business. So keeping somewhere or several somewheres aflame with the petty tribal hatreds that require big expenditures on weapons to prosecute aims is good business. Sadly it is not so good for the people trying hard to live day by day in these war zones.
Imagine waking up every day wondering if my children will be safe at school. Will a missile strike the school, a bomb fall on it or will the day’s horror come from the government telling my daughter she is not dressed modest enough and then stoning her to death. Maybe I send my children off to enjoy a music festival. Will any parent feel secure doing that ever again in the Middle East?
Why can we not even hope briefly that this can change. When Pakistan aligns with Israel there must be hope. When Saudi Arabia aligns with Israel, when the UAE and Kuwait and Syria all align with Isreal we can begin to hope. And when Iranian muslims worldwide start aligning with Israel, hope rises strongly.
But the new boss can’t be the old boss. These regional hatreds must be ended. They serve no one but military industrial might of the US, Russian and Chinese attempts at dominance and a politician’s desire to use fears to drive votes to their side of the floor. How else could you look at a lifetime of selling weapons systems to Israel, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the UAE while at the same time sending pallets of cash to Iran?
So take out all the bad guys and let the people decide seems to be the model of change for today. Eliminate the leadership to the point that someone finally says ‘I do not want to be the next target, let’s make a deal.’ Is Reza Pahlavi the answer or is a succession of blown of clerics. Can Reza ride a wave of popular support to install a constitutional monarchy, assuming the role of Shaw while giving all power to the people through a democratic constitution? Is this even possible?
Reza has waited forty years for this moment. Is he strong enough not to succumb to the idea of becoming the new strongman of Iran. This as yet is to be seen. First the people need to gain control of the system, to oust the mullahs and all the support mechanisms of the Islamic rule, rid themselves of theocracy. Can they do this? Not without support from outside. Guns are the necessity. As the say, ‘lots and lots of guns.’
If this can be accomplished what a wonderful world this could be! Apologies for the continued musical alliterations. Of course there may be simmering hatreds from the citizenry, but if the institutional hatreds are resolved or at least quieted can a next generation grow learning a different way. Maybe then we can turn our sites to the real enemy.
Possibly we can rid ourselves of the politicians who pander to jews or muslims to get votes, then betray their promises to foster these forever hatreds so they can continue to win campaign funding from the military industrial complex.
Maybe if a new pro western government (read that as pro liberty) takes hold in Iran, arms will stop flowing to Russia, oil will stop flowing freely to China and once again the liberal democracies of the world will hold the future in their hands. Can ending the Islamic regime in Iran end war? Of course not. But as there lynchpin for many of todays current issues, Iran changing will change the world dynamic.
I for one will cheer for the change. For the children of Israel, Iran and the rest of the Middle East. For the children of Ukraine and Venezuela and Cuba. All of these countries and their citizens will have the opportunity to soon sleep the real sleep of liberty and safety. It can not come too soon. So far the new boss is different. Let us hope that continues.
